Spring Training Injury Update
Several players faced injuries during spring training; however, most of these setbacks have resolved quickly. Currently, only two players remain on the injured list—Tyson Miller and Javier Assad. Assad, who was placed on the 15-day list on March 17 with a strained left oblique, is now approximately halfway through his required recovery period.
Steady Recovery Process
Assad has begun making notable progress in his rehabilitation. He recently completed a 40-pitch bullpen session and is scheduled to begin batting practice in the coming days. These developments suggest that his recovery is tracking as expected, aligning well with the timeline for his return to full strength.
Upcoming Role in the Rotation
The Cubs plan to integrate Assad as the fifth starter in the rotation for the upcoming series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His availability will be evaluated after the series concludes on March 30, considering both his progress and the performance of incumbent starter Rea. Assad’s potential early return is promising given his versatility and proven productivity on the mound during his initial three MLB seasons.
Performance and Future Prospects
Assad’s recent season marked an increased workload, pitching 147 innings over 29 games with a 3.73 ERA and a 1.401 WHIP. Despite encountering challenges, including allowing 20 home runs, his performance remains commendable, particularly when viewed against the backdrop of his progressively heavier usage—from 37.2 innings to 109.1 and then 147 innings. His comprehensive pitch repertoire and ability to adapt to different in-game scenarios make him an essential asset for the Cubs. The team is optimistic that he will regain his momentum during these bullpen sessions and contribute significantly as the season advances.
