Team Roster Adjustments
The Detroit Tigers have reshaped their spring training roster, reassigning several pitchers to the minor leagues. Among those shifted is Matt Manning, a former top prospect selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2016 draft out of California. Manning will now spend the remainder of spring training in Triple-A Toledo, joining other right-handed pitchers who have also transitioned to the minor league camp. With these moves, the major league camp now consists of 51 players.
Manning’s Career Journey
Manning’s time in the majors has been met with mixed results. Over 50 starts for the team, he has pitched 254 innings while recording a 4.43 ERA and 178 strikeouts. His career has been hindered by persistent injury issues, limiting his playing time in recent seasons. Even in the minors, he has rarely exceeded a 20-start mark, with his highest workload being 25 starts in a combined effort between Toledo and the Tigers in 2021.
Spring Training Setbacks
Manning’s struggles were highlighted during recent Grapefruit League games. Over three exhibition appearances, he tossed six innings while giving up 10 hits and issuing eight walks. The control issues contributed to eight earned runs and a notably high ERA of 12.00. This performance, against the backdrop of healthy competition among several pitchers vying for a rotation spot, cemented the decision to option him to Triple-A.
Looking Ahead for the Pitcher
Facing an uphill battle, Manning now must focus on improving his consistency and maintaining his health to earn another shot at the major league rotation. With a talented group of pitchers, including emerging prospects and established arms already in the mix, the team is prioritizing those who can contribute immediately. Manning’s future will depend on his ability to regain form and capitalize on any opportunity to return to a higher level of performance.
