Reds’ Spencer Steer Struggles with Lingering Shoulder Injury
Spencer Steer, a key player for the Reds, has been grappling with a persistent shoulder injury that has plagued him since last season. This setback has prevented him from participating in throwing sessions during spring training. Despite being initially slated as the designated hitter in the lineup, Steer had to be withdrawn after opting for a cortisone shot, as reported by Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer.
Steer, in an interview with Mark Sheldon, expressed his frustration with the slow progress of his rehabilitation, stating, “It’s just taken longer than we thought to get to this point. I’m just trying to get over the hump to where I feel like I’m in a spot where once I start throwing, I don’t have any setbacks and we kind of go full-go.” The Reds are keen on ensuring Steer’s full recovery before the season commences, even if it means placing him on the injured list initially.
Known for his durability, Steer has been a consistent presence in the Reds’ lineup, appearing in 158 games last season and showcasing his offensive prowess with 20 home runs and 92 RBI. Over the past two seasons, he has featured in a total of 314 games, highlighting his importance to the team. Reds manager Terry Francona emphasized the need to prioritize Steer’s shoulder health, hinting that a cautious approach might be necessary, potentially affecting the start of the season for Steer.
