It wasn’t too long ago that Ben Simmons was viewed as an NBA unicorn—a 6’10” point guard with elite defensive versatility and All-Star potential. While injuries and mental hurdles have stalled his career, Patrick Beverley still believes in Simmons’ ability to thrive—especially with the LA Clippers.
On the latest episode of The Pat Bev Pod, Beverley made a bold prediction: Simmons will be a “game-changer” for the Clippers. And he had four major reasons to back it up.
1️⃣ Patty Mills’ Mentorship: A Big Brother Effect
Beverley’s first reason? Simmons will be surrounded by familiar faces, particularly fellow Australian veteran Patty Mills.
“Patty Mills has been knowing Ben Simmons since he was a child. It’s no other feeling like a big bro on the same team. And the big bro from the same country.”
Having a trusted mentor like Mills could help reignite Simmons’ confidence—something he’s struggled with in recent years.
2️⃣ Kawhi Leonard: A Blueprint for Overcoming Adversity
Simmons has faced intense criticism, both for his injuries and reluctance to shoot, but Beverley believes Kawhi Leonard’s presence will be invaluable in helping him navigate those challenges.
“You talk about a player your size, hard work, has dealt with criticism, dealing with injuries, has had the mentality of, ‘I have to overcome another injury’—Kawhi Leonard.”
Leonard has battled serious injuries throughout his career but has proven he can return to an elite level. If anyone can help Simmons block out the noise and refocus, it’s Kawhi.
3️⃣ James Harden’s Leadership Evolution
Harden and Simmons weren’t exactly best friends when they were teammates in Philadelphia, but Beverley believes Harden has grown as a leader and could now be a great fit alongside Simmons.
“James Harden has been criticized in the past on his leadership. I think as of late, he’s been a phenomenal leader. Teammates love to play with him, he makes the right play, and every center that he plays with, they play extremely well.”
A pass-first Harden could allow Simmons to focus on defense, playmaking, and transition scoring—areas where he still excels when healthy.
4️⃣ Tyronn Lue: A Coach Who Maximizes Players
Beverley’s final reason? Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, whom he believes can unlock Simmons’ full potential.
“Player success is predicated on the coach also. I think T Lue is one of the best of them. Getting the best that he can out of his players. Defensively, Ben Simmons is going to wreak havoc.”
Lue has a reputation for adjusting schemes to fit his roster’s strengths, and Simmons could thrive in a defensive disruptor role under his system.
What’s Next for Simmons & the Clippers?
Simmons won’t make his debut against the Grizzlies on Wednesday, but expectations are already sky-high from Beverley and others.
The real question: Can Simmons regain his form and contribute to a Clippers team aiming for a deep playoff run?
If Beverley’s vision comes true, LA might have just landed one of the league’s biggest X-factors.
Will Ben Simmons finally revive his career in Los Angeles? The answer could determine how dangerous the Clippers become down the stretch.
