New Chapter for Ricky Council IV
After the Philadelphia 76ers suffered a third consecutive defeat to the Boston Celtics, the team moved to assign young forward Ricky Council IV to the Delaware Blue Coats. With the 76ers taking a short break for the next couple of days, the assignment gives Council an opportunity to return to the court as early as Friday night while the Blue Coats host the Greensboro Swarm.
Performance Challenges on the Main Roster
Council’s minutes with the 76ers have been limited this season. In his recent appearance against the Celtics, he played under eight minutes, contributing four points, two rebounds, and two assists while struggling with his shooting efficiency. His brief stint against the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in the week yielded just seven minutes of game time, further underscoring the challenge he faces in earning consistent opportunities.
G League Experience and Impact
Council’s time with the Delaware Blue Coats isn’t new. In an earlier assignment a few months ago, he delivered an impressive performance by scoring 29 points in 37 minutes, along with eight rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Last season, during 11 games in the G League, he averaged 23 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 32 minutes per game while shooting 35 percent from three-point range. These numbers highlight his potential when afforded a larger role on the floor.
Looking Ahead
Given his promising performances in the G League and the limited chances he has had with the 76ers, there is anticipation around how long his assignment will last. There remains a possibility that Council could be recalled before the upcoming matchup against the Utah Jazz on Sunday. The move to Delaware provides him with an avenue to refine his skills and potentially carve out a more significant role when he returns to the main roster.
