The Golden State Warriors hit another low point on Monday night, suffering a lopsided defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics. Now sitting at 21-21 and tied for 10th in the Western Conference with the Phoenix Suns, the defending champions face mounting questions about their inconsistency this season.
Speaking candidly after the loss, Warriors star Steph Curry didn’t shy away from addressing the team’s struggles.
Curry’s blunt assessment of the Warriors’ performance
Reflecting on the blowout loss, Curry highlighted the team’s inability to maintain focus and energy when faced with adversity.
“I have no idea, it’s just a tough one from the end of the first quarter through the rest of the game,” Curry admitted. “I thought we came out with pretty good life and energy. A big part of our season has been when we can’t score, we lose spirit, we lose life, we lose competitiveness. You can get away with it against some teams. Against the defending champs, it’s not a good formula for success.”
Curry’s comments underscore a recurring issue for the Warriors this season: their inability to respond effectively when things don’t go their way on the court.
Staying focused amid external criticism
With the Warriors battling to stay above .500, Curry acknowledged the external noise surrounding the team but emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and focus in the locker room.
“We need to have positive vibes in our locker room no matter what happens in a win or a loss,” Curry said. “You just got to be able to come with the right attitude. Like I said, it’s a belief thing that we can win whatever game is in front of us.”
Curry also addressed the creeping doubt that can plague a struggling team, urging his teammates to block out negativity and focus on executing their game plan.
“It’s more so like an in-game thing. If doubt creeps in or a mindset that you’re not supposed to be on the floor, you’re a team that’s unbeatable, like I don’t know what it could be or what it is,” Curry added. “You have to be able to just focus on what we need to do and hope it works out.”
What’s next for the Warriors?
The Warriors face a quick turnaround as they prepare to take on the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. Sitting at 10th in the Western Conference, Golden State finds itself in a precarious position as it fights to secure a playoff spot in a tightly packed race.
While Curry continues to shoulder the leadership burden, the team’s success will depend on finding a consistent level of competitiveness and energy—qualities that have defined their championship runs in the past but have been glaringly absent this season.
