Signing Overview
Baltimore Ravens have secured veteran cornerback Chidobe Awuzie on a one-year minimum contract. Awuzie, an eight-year NFL veteran, was released by the Tennessee Titans after a challenging season marked by a groin injury. His new contract with the Ravens provides him with a fresh opportunity in the competitive AFC North.
Professional Journey
Awuzie began his professional career when he was selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. During his tenure with the Cowboys, he appeared in 49 games, amassing 213 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His time in Dallas was interrupted by a hamstring injury in his final year with the team, limiting his participation to just eight games. Following his stint with the Cowboys, Awuzie joined the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021, where he continued to demonstrate his skills over three seasons with 156 tackles, two interceptions, and 25 pass breakups in 27 games.
Injury Setbacks
Throughout his career, injuries have posed significant challenges for Awuzie. While a hamstring injury curtailed his last season in Dallas, his time with the Bengals was also affected by a serious ACL tear, which sidelined him for nearly an entire season. His most recent season took a further setback when a groin injury during Week 3 prevented him from consistently contributing on the field while playing for the Titans. In that season, he managed only seven starts, recording 26 tackles, an interception, four pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
Transition to Baltimore
After signing a three-year, $36-million contract with the Titans that included nearly $23 million in guaranteed money and a $7.5-million signing bonus, Awuzie’s injury struggles led to an early release by Tennessee. The new chapter with the Baltimore Ravens offers him the chance to revitalize his career. With his extensive NFL experience, Awuzie looks set to contribute to Baltimore’s defensive unit as he embarks on what may be a pivotal season in his career.
