The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Pursuit of Justin Fields Before Free Agency
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a race against time as they strive to secure quarterback Justin Fields before the onset of free agency, set to begin with the legal tampering period on March 10. As one of the premier quarterbacks available this offseason, Fields is likely to attract a strong market and multiple suitors if he does not reach a new agreement with the Steelers in the near future.
Aiming for an Affordable Deal
Despite the competitive landscape, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer suggests that signing the 26-year-old Fields may not necessitate an exorbitant contract. Breer predicts that Fields could potentially secure a deal in the ballpark of the one-year, $10 million agreement that Sam Darnold inked with the Minnesota Vikings last year.
Breer stated, “Speaking of the Steelers, this is, of course, a big week for Pittsburgh to try to get Justin Fields re-signed. He’ll have options elsewhere—one team would be the New York Jets, and I wouldn’t be stunned to see Indy throw its hat in the ring—if he gets to the market. I think he has a shot to get a deal like Sam Darnold got with the Minnesota Vikings last year.”
Comparing Fields to Darnold
The Vikings’ deal with Darnold proved to be successful, despite a slightly underwhelming season. Darnold’s impressive performance, including 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, along with a Pro Bowl selection, positioned him for a significant pay raise this year.
Breer’s perspective contrasts with recent speculation suggesting that Fields could command a surprisingly lucrative contract due to the reported interest from various teams. If Pittsburgh can retain Fields with a modest, one-year deal, it would be a strategic move for the team.
Fields’ Potential and Value to the Steelers
Fields showcased his potential in the six starts he made for the Steelers during Weeks 1 through 6, filling in admirably for Russell Wilson while he recovered from a calf injury. Fields amassed 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns, and an interception, in addition to 231 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
While the Steelers have other options like retaining Wilson, drafting a quarterback, or signing a veteran, retaining Fields at the rumored price should be a priority for Pittsburgh. With his demonstrated talent and affordability, Fields represents a valuable asset for the team moving forward.
