The Green Bay Packers had one of the more unstable kicking situations in the NFL last season, with rookie Anders Carlson making 81.8 percent of his field goals, which was 26th in the NFL.
It wasn’t enough to cost him his roster spot after one season, but the Packers have decided to make things interesting by bringing in a bit of competition.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, veteran kicker and former Minnesota Viking Greg Joseph is signing a deal with the Packers to compete with Carlson.

Carlson was 27-33 on field goals last year, with all his misses coming from beyond 40 yards.
He also had a rough year with extra points finishing 32nd in the NFL at just 87.2 percent (34-39) and was the only kicker to miss more than three of them.
If you don’t have a Justin Tucker-level kicker in the NFL, it makes sense to always keep looking until you find someone close to that level.
Joseph isn’t a star and had his own struggles last year with the Vikings making only 80 percent of his kicks, though he did go 36 for 38 on extra points for 94.7 percent.
He has spent the last three seasons with the Vikings and made 82.6 percent of his kicks in his career.
Both Joseph and Carlson were 7-13 on kicks longer than 40 yards last season, so Joseph isn’t coming in as an immediate upgrade.
He is likely here to just light a fire under Carlson and push the rookie to be better, as the Packers are coming off a surprising season and need to be able to rely on their kicker as they ascend toward the top of the NFC.
