The Green Bay Packers are in a bit of a conundrum right now.
On one hand, they need to get rid of David Bakhtiari’s cap hit.
On the other hand, he’s a franchise legend, and they should be quite careful in the way they deal with his situation.
Considering that, it’s not much of a surprise to see GM Brian Gutekunst having a hard time making up his mind about this.
Talking at the NFL Scouting Combine, the general manager admitted that he doesn’t like to make tough decisions before he absolutely has to, adding that he’s going to make up his mind before the start of the league year on March 13 (via Rob Demovsky).
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said he hasn’t made a move w/LT David Bakhtiari cuz he doesn’t like to make decisions before he has to.
He certainly doesn’t want to carry his cap number once the league starts.
“Like to have a decision before that,” BG said just now at the combine.

The Packers are over the salary cap, and Bakhtiari will have a cap hit of over $21 million.
He was only able to make one appearance last season and has barely played since 2020.
Given his age, it just makes sense that that team thanks him for his services and moves on.
Then again, he could also look to be a part of their rebuild, as he’s been a Packer for life and might want to stay at Lambeau Field for the remainder of his career.
Whatever the case, the Packers will need to sort things out when it comes to his contract, whether it’s restructuring his contract and signing him to a new deal or cutting ties with him to allow him to become a free agent and maybe reunite with Aaron Rodgers in New York.
