San Diego Padres reliever Josh Hader has pitched in 57 games in the 2023 season.
The vast majority of them have been one-inning appearances, and the few exceptions to the rule have been shorter games (one or two outs).
The number of times he has pitched more than one inning in 2023?
Zero.
There is nothing wrong with knowing one’s limitations or setting boundaries when it comes to usage.
A player, especially a pitcher, has to take care of his body because it’s his way of making money and providing for his family.
However, Hader’s attitude didn’t appear to be the best when talking to reporters after Monday’s game, a crushing 2-1 defeat at the hands of the San Francisco Giants.
“Josh Hader, asked his thinking behind not making himself available for 4 outs: ‘It’s the situation that we were at.’ Asked to clarify, he said, ‘Are we in the playoff race?’ Technically, yes, but it would take a miracle, to which he said, ‘You guys want me to do everything,’” Padres insider AJ Cassavell tweeted.

Clearly, Hader has some issues with being used for more than an inning.
Again, that’s fine.
But the Padres are, or were, in a playoff race because they still have mathematical chances.
He can say whatever he wants, but fans would definitely have loved to see him saying and believing that the team is still in the hunt.
They still are, technically.
The “you guys want me to do everything” makes him come across as arrogant, too.
Hader is a free agent after the season and fans, despite his excellent numbers, are not loving these quotes.
