Not much went right for the Carolina Panthers during the 2023 NFL season as the team’s offense cratered despite adding Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Panthers finished the year with the worst record in the league and concluded the year with a shutout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that Carolina won’t even have the first overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft by their trade last year to move up to select Young.
Not being able to add another potential franchise cornerstone will hurt the Panthers’ rebuild, though they’ve at least got some pieces they can build around on the defensive end.
One of those players is Derrick Brown who has been one of the better defensive ends in the NFL since coming into the league in 2020.
Brown’s a menace in the trenches and made NFL history in Week 18 via Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.
“DT Derrick Brown is up to 99 tackles on the season, setting a new record for a defensive lineman in NFL history,” Meirov tweeted.

For Brown, he’s involved in nearly any play whether or not it’s a run or pass and his accomplishment speaks to how much he’s around the football.
While Panthers fans haven’t had much to cheer about this season, Brown’s play should give them hope that the defense can at least carry the team while Young develops.
With so many holes on the roster, Carolina can go in a number of directions and perhaps the best path forward is adding to their defensive line.
