Heading into the 2023 NFL season, the expectations for the Carolina Panthers weren’t exactly high, but few likely expected them to remain winless after their first six games like they are so far this year.
With rookie quarterback Bryce Young starting under center, the Panthers haven’t won a game yet this season, and a big reason for the team’s struggles has been due to the offense not being able to produce as much as it might be capable of.
So, in an effort to create some sort of spark for his team, Carolina head coach Frank Reich announced on Monday that he is relinquishing his duties as the team’s offensive play-caller, and that role will now belong to current Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown (via NFL Media’s Tom Peliserro).
#Panthers coach Frank Reich informed players today he has decided to hand over play-calling duties to OC Thomas Brown, sources tell me, @MikeGarafolo and @RapSheet.

Through their first six games this year, Carolina ranks 23rd in the NFL in total yards, 23rd in passing yards, 22nd in passing yards, and 24th in points scored per offensive drive.
During their last three matchups, the Panthers have averaged fewer than 20 points per game, and that is something they are hoping changes with the switch to Thomas as their play-caller.
Carolina’s rushing attack is something that has been a pretty big disappointment for the team this year, especially after signing former Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders this past offseason.
In five games this season, Sanders has only rushed for 190 yards and one touchdown on 61 carries, which has amounted to a measly 38 yards on the ground per contest.
With Thomas now calling the plays, the Panthers are hoping to get more out of Sanders and the rest of the offense for the rest of 2023.
