The future of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will be one of the biggest questions heading into this upcoming offseason.
Belichick will finish this season with his worst record as head coach of the Patriots, and rumors about whether or not team owner Robert Kraft will keep the legendary coach have already spiraled, as well as where Belichick could land next if he does leave New England.
That decision, though, reportedly won’t come immediately after the Patriots play their final 2023 game.
The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin reported that the Patriots could take “weeks” to decide whether or not to keep Belichick, which could have huge implications on the head coaching hiring cycle as a whole.
The Patriots will close out their season on Sunday, but it could take “weeks” to reach a final decision on Bill Belichick’s job status, according to a new report. https://t.co/nRssG9qzw8

Belichick has been linked to the Los Angeles Chargers as well as teams in the NFC South, but in order for Belichick to coach another team, he would need to either be fired or traded.
So the fact that the Patriots haven’t made a decision yet and reportedly won’t make a decision for some time means that those teams who are reportedly interested in Belichick will either have to wait and possibly miss out on other head coaching candidates or hire someone else in the meantime.
That’s a tough situation to be in when you’re dealing with one of the most successful head coaches in NFL history.
For the Patriots, it’s a choice between continuity and legacy for a coach in Belichick who’s led bad teams recently, or a fresh new start in unchartered territory with a likely top-5 draft pick.
