The inevitable happened this offseason, as the Chicago Bears finally traded quarterback Justin Fields to pave the way for projected No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams to steer the ship for the foreseeable future.
The writing was on the wall as soon as the Bears landed the first pick in the draft, even though it was so tough for Bears fans to come to terms with, and former quarterback Phil Simms is one of the many analysts who believes the Bears are doing the right thing.
Simms went on The Ross Tucker Podcast to discuss the two quarterbacks, and he said Fields is, “just not a good processor…I watch the tape and there are people wide open everywhere…Caleb Williams clearly a better passer of the football.”

Simms added that he thought Fields got a little better at the end, which did become clear over the last handful of games in 2023, but it wasn’t the first time Fields put together a few impressive games.
Ultimately, the body of work overall just wasn’t good enough to convince the Bears to trade a second consecutive No. 1 pick.
Fields threw for 2,562 yards in 13 games last season with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions and was much less effective as a runner, which appeared strategic as he acted like a traditional pocket passer for much of the 2023 season.
Fields will now get to learn behind Russell Wilson with the Pittsburgh Steelers, while Williams will get to step into an enviable situation with two great wide receivers in Keenan Allen and D.J. Moore, as well as another top-10 pick to work with.
