The Atlanta Falcons were the talk of the 2024 NFL Draft but for the wrong reasons as they made the most shocking pick of the weekend, taking Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. No. 8 overall.
Penix had been rising up boards in the weeks leading up to the draft, and the quarterback seemed like a lock to go in the first round after all the buzz he had been getting.
However, no one could have expected him to go to the Falcons, who had other needs on the roster.
Complicating matters is the fact that Atlanta already signed Kirk Cousins to a massive deal during free agency and is slated to be their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
Cousins was reportedly caught off guard by the pick, a bad sign for a Falcons organization that is looking to turn things around in 2024.
Despite all the outside noise, head coach Raheem Morris set the record straight when it comes to Cousins’ future, via Marc Raimondi of ESPN.
“We came up with a decision, this is what we plan to do,” said Morris, who was hired in January after the firing of former coach Arthur Smith. “And Kirk does not have to look over his shoulder every time he throws a bad pass. Like, that is not the case.”
Morris will roll with Cousins as his starter barring any unforeseen situations or injuries, though Penix right behind him could cause some friction throughout the year.
This will definitely be a situation worth monitoring as Cousins looks to bounce back from his injury.
