When the New York Mets signed Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, they told the players that their intention was to contend for the World Series immediately.
Then, according to Scherzer, the discourse changed with the organization’s lousy 2023 campaign.
The pitcher said they were aiming to contend in 2025-2026, he didn’t agree, and was traded.
People in the industry, however, doubt that the Mets are willing to wait one or two seasons before putting together a truly competitive team.
“The Mets are reportedly going ‘full bore’ in trying to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga, and others: ‘They’re not messing around. I don’t think they have the stomach for a year or two to get the ship turned around.’ – an MLB executive,” SNY tweeted.

By trading the two veteran aces plus David Robertson, Tommy Pham, and other players before the 2023 deadline, the Mets replenished their farm system and added some really solid prospects.
They also have unlimited resources stemming from the wealthiest, most motivated owner in baseball: Steve Cohen.
With a good core (they still employ Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Starling Marte, Kodai Senga, Edwin Diaz, and others), some very impressive prospects to serve as immediate contributors or trade pieces, and money to sign free agents, it’s easy to see the Mets trying to pursue the top players during the offseason and contending in 2024.
Yamamoto and Imanaga are two really talented starters.
They could potentially have three Japanese aces, with Senga, Yamamoto, and Imanaga, all very good and talented.
There is a lot of time left in the offseason, but if the Mets want, they can be contenders for a postseason spot next season.
