The NFC South has been by far and away the least interesting division during the 2023 NFL season as every team has looked mediocre at best, most notably the Atlanta Falcons.
As things stand, the New Orleans Saints are set to win the division and make the playoffs, though the Falcons have been able to keep pace with them in the standings.
However, Atlanta’s wins haven’t been very pretty as the offense struggles to move the football with Desmond Ridder under center.
Head coach Arthur Smith has defended Ridder previously, but then also benched him in favor of backup Taylor Heinicke.
Heinicke breathed some life into a listless Atlanta offense, but he got hurt and Smith was forced to go back to Ridder as the starter.
Jason La Canfora took note of the Falcons’ struggles in their Week 12 matchup against the Saints and had some pointed words for Smith via his personal Twitter account.
Arthur Smith really doesn’t want to keep his job. Crazy. He benched the QB for many reasons. Has 2 timeouts against a defense he is pushing around on the ground so sure, throw a pick from their 10 to end the half without at least being up by 8. Game management is brutal

At the end of the first half, Ridder was picked off and it removed a crucial scoring opportunity for Atlanta that struggles to produce points.
Smith has come under fire from both media analysts like La Canfora and fans for his playcalling and game management, and a losing season could mean the end of his tenure manning the Falcons’ sidelines.
However, with an opportunity to still claim the division title, Smith could very well save his job if they somehow end up pulling that off.
It doesn’t seem like Smith is the right man for the job, but for now, he is clinging on.
