The Philadelphia Eagles arrived at MetLife Stadium with a 5-0 record, but no one was 100% satisfied with their performance.
Veteran C Jason Kelce and QB Jalen Hurts had already talked about how they hadn’t played up to their standards, especially on the offensive side of the field.
Then again, all that mattered was their record, and they had continued to find ways to win football games.
Notably, that can only be sustained for so long, and the New York Jets’ stout defense locked them up and handed them their first loss of the season.
Following the loss, reporter John Clark revealed that the players didn’t even need HC Nick Sirianni to reach out to them and give them a pep talk.
I’m told in Eagles locker room after the loss, AJ Brown started talking to the team then Haason Reddick joined in and Jalen Hurts spoke to the team. Instead, A.J. Brown, Haason Reddick, and Kelce addressed their teammates and urged them to be accountable for their mistakes and their poor play, stating that they just needed to take a deep look in the mirror.
It takes a lot of maturity, personality, and close bonds in a locker room to achieve this kind of self-sufficient leadership.
The Eagles know they’re not playing to win regular-season games, and losing to the Jets won’t be the end of the world.
However, they also know they cannot afford to keep their losing habits mounting up as they pursue the ultimate goal.
They know they’re better than this, and they don’t need someone else telling them that or what they did wrong.
Perhaps this loss is just what they needed to snap out of this.
