The Houston Texans are headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2019 with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans has coached his team to a 10-7 record, but the play of C.J. Stroud under center has been exemplary, as evidenced by the Texans’ 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18.
Despite Stroud’s status as a first-year play, former NFL head coach and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan is ready to crown Stroud as one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
“This rookie, in my opinion, is playing as well as any quarterback in the National Football League,” Ryan said. “This is incredible what this kid is doing.”

Stroud is playing well despite a brand-new offensive system in Houston under first-time offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and a cast of skill position players either still on their rookie deals or cheap one-year contracts and without star rookie wide receiver Tank Dell.
Third-year receiver Nico Collins has proven himself a star, tight end Dalton Schultz emerged as a reliable target, and running back Devin Singletary stepped up in the backfield over second-year rusher Dameon Pierce.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Texans’ season now is that they can win the AFC South if the Jacksonville Jaguars lose to the Tennessee Titans in Week 18.
