Over the past year or so, there had been a lot of speculation about Bill Belichick’s future with the New England Patriots, as the storied franchise has struggled year in and year out since the departure of superstar quarterback Tom Brady.
After another forgettable season in New England and with no real hope for the immediate future, Belichick and the Patriots decided it was time to part ways after a 24-year partnership that resulted in six Super Bowl titles.
Once it became official that Belichick was a free agent on the open market, it seemed inevitable that he would find another coaching job quickly, especially with the Atlanta Falcons said to be aggressive in their pursuit of the legendary head coach.
Despite all the speculation, all the head coaching jobs in the NFL were filled and Belichick was left without a job, meaning he’ll likely have to wait until this time next year for another gig.
On Monday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about Belichick not coaching this year and said he believes the legendary head coach will still be around the game in some capacity, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
“I think he’ll be missed. But I have a feeling he’ll still be around the game,” Goodell said.

It will be strange not to see Belichick on the sideline in the NFL for the first time in several decades, as he has become a staple in the NFL much in the same way Brady was under center for the Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Belichick and whether he can surpass Don Shula as the winningest coach in NFL history.
