The Kansas City Royals have been perhaps the worst team in baseball since they won the 2015 World Series.
They haven’t even made the postseason since, and don’t look likely to compete anytime soon unless there are major changes in the organization.
Despite having Bobby Witt Jr. and breakout star Cole Ragans since the second half, they finished last in the AL Central with a horrible 56-106 record.
A Friday report, however, brought some optimism to Royals fans.
Their team is actually alive!
They are asking about top free agents and interested in bringing them!
That alone is a major development and definitely a paradigm shift from recent offseasons.
This time, they are reportedly “in on” free-agent starter Seth Lugo, per B/R Walk-Off and Ken Rosenthal.

Lugo had a great season this year with the San Diego Padres.
Formerly a reliever, he returned to starting and had a 3.57 ERA in 146.1 frames.
He also accumulated 140 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP.
If the Royals can pull that signing off, Lugo and Ragans could form a talented one-two punch at the top of the rotation, with Daniel Lynch and Brady Singer following them.
At this point, Lugo is being coveted by other contenders so him signing with the Royals remains an unlikely scenario.
The Boston Red Sox, for example, are after his services.
However, the sole fact Kansas City is interested and actually making an effort to secure his signature is excellent for baseball.
Their fans deserve a competitive team, and ever since those consecutive World Series appearances in 2014 and 2014, the Royals have done nothing but lose.
