The Washington Commanders are having the season that many people on the outside thought they would have.
They are right around .500 with a 4-5 record and have been inconsistent from week to week.
One reason for that is because they have a young starting quarterback.
Sam Howell is in his second NFL season and his first as a starter.
He has gone through plenty of growing pains, but there do seem to be some positives in Howell’s game.
His best game of the season came against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns.
However, he also threw one of his nine interceptions in that game.
It seems like Howell has been helped out by the addition of Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator.
Through nine games, Howell is second in the NFL in passing yards, and he hopes to continue showing the Commanders that he can be their quarterback of the future.
According to ESPN via JPAFootball, Howell said he wants to be the team’s future at the position.
But he continues to take things one day at a time.

Despite his success, one spot where Howell has struggled is in taking sacks.
While not all of that is his fault, he has been sacked 44 times this year, which is the most in the NFL and 13 more than the quarterback in second place.
Obviously, there are still plenty of kinks to work out for this young quarterback, and how he plays the rest of the season will be crucial.
If he’s up to the task, Howell has a chance to show the Commanders that he can be their franchise quarterback moving forward.
