As one of the best defensive coordinators in the game today, Raheem Morris was someone who was expected to be a hot commodity when teams around the NFL started looking to fill head coaching vacancies during the offseason.
Although Morris, formerly of the Los Angeles Rams, shared the spotlight with big-name coaching candidates like Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and Jim Harbaugh, he was able to get the job with the Atlanta Falcons, who interviewed 14 candidates after parting ways with Arthur Smith shortly after their season ended.
With the consensus being that Belichick would be Atlanta’s new head coach, the Falcons’ decision to hire Morris on Thursday was surprising, to say the least.
Although it was a shocking move by the Falcons, the former Rams defensive coordinator is getting a lot of support from his former colleagues and players around the league after the announcement was made.
Rams head coach Sean McVay is the latest to give Morris some support for getting the job in Atlanta, even though he admits he’s sad to see him leave Los Angeles, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.
Rams coach Sean McVay, via text, on defensive coordinator and close friend Raheem Morris landing the Falcons job: “I can’t say enough good things about the guy”, adding that he’s “happy and sad at the same time”.

This isn’t Morris’ first time with the Falcons organization, as he spent time with the team from 2015 to 2020 with different job titles, from an assistant to defensive coordinator to interim head coach.
With the Falcons desperately needing to turn things around in Atlanta, Morris will have his hands full trying to figure out ways to right the ship and who to bring in to help him get this team back into playoff contention.
