For years, people in NFL circles have talked about how Eric Bieniemy can’t strike a head coaching job in the league.
Bieniemy did an outstanding job with the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense, and he underwent multiple interviews, but to no avail.
Needless to say, it’s not very usual to see top assistants from Super Bowl-winning teams holding onto their positions as assistants for so long, especially those from a team as successful as the Chiefs.
Bieniemy, however, could only land a deal as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Washington Commanders, and the results weren’t all that great.
Still, even if the Commanders wouldn’t bring him back after just one season, Shannon Sharpe thinks he made a mistake by taking the same position at UCLA.
Talking to Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson for their Nightcap show, Sharpe thinks that if he couldn’t get a head coaching position by being an assistant in the NFL, he’s only going to get more overlooked now that he’s out of sight.
“I felt it was a mistake him leaving anyway. He let people convince him, well you need to go outside of Andy,” Sharpe said.
That’s an interesting take, and he might be right on point there.
Perhaps the Chiefs weren’t interested in bringing him back, but he could’ve been Andy Reid’s eventual successor at Arrowhead Stadium.
Not many coaches go from the NFL to college; it’s usually the other way around.
Of course, this is a great hire for the Bruins, and there’s always a chance that he’s going to put the world on notice with another high-octane offense.
Still, it seems like he’s just going to keep getting overlooked.
