Since he was inserted as the team’s starter last season, the career of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has turned out to be something that almost no one could have predicted.
Purdy, a seventh-round draft pick in 2022, has now started under center in 10 regular-season games for the 49ers, and they haven’t lost any of these 10 matchups.
The young San Francisco quarterback certainly gets to benefit from his team being surrounded by some of the most talented players in the NFL on both sides of the ball, but he still deserves some credit for what he’s been able to accomplish so far.
Given the impressive start to his career, some have wondered if Purdy should already be considered one of the elite quarterbacks in the league.
ESPN’s Shannon Sharpe recently provided his take on this on “First Take,” and according to the Hall-of-Fame tight end, Purdy has not reached that level of performance yet.
“No, he’s not an elite quarterback. He’s a product of the system. It’s more a credit to [49ers head coach] Kyle Shanahan and what he’s done.”

In his five games this season, Purdy has completed 72.1 percent of his passes for 1,271 yards, nine touchdowns, and no interceptions, which has resulted in a 123.1 passer rating.
Compared to last year, his completion percentage is higher, he’s averaging more passing yards per game, and his touchdown to interception ratio is better.
What the 49ers care about the most is that Purdy is leading them to wins, and he’s not making things difficult for them on the field.
So whether he’s elite or not, his performance out on the field has helped San Francisco begin the season with a 5-0 record.
