Manchester United’s striker, Rasmus Hojlund, has once again come under fire following his lackluster performance in the recent 1-1 standoff with Arsenal. Renowned Sky Sports commentator, Jamie Redknapp, didn’t hold back in his critique of the Danish forward, branding his performance as ‘not good enough’.
Having substituted into the game in the second half, Hojlund had been expected to make a significant impact from the bench. However, his involvement proved to be disappointing, with the beleaguered forward missing a golden opportunity to score for the Red Devils. This has raised the ire of many fans, who are now calling for the club to either sell him or loan him out.
Since his high-profile transfer from Atalanta, Hojlund has struggled to establish himself as a regular in the starting line-up for the Red Devils. Despite having made 23 Premier League appearances this season, the Danish attacker has only managed to net two goals. His performances have come under severe scrutiny, and not just from the fans. Both current manager, Ruben Amorim, and his predecessor, Erik ten Hag, have seemingly failed to extract the best from the young striker.
In an analysis shared on Sky Sports, Redknapp expressed his disappointment with Hojlund’s performance. As quoted by the Daily Mail, he said, “He would have been sitting on the bench thinking please give me one of these kinds of chances. His first touch isn’t right, takes it too wide. He’s had to open his body up with his left foot and bend it in. It’s just not good enough, it’s too slow. I just don’t understand why he thinks he’s got more time than that. Everything is happening so quickly.”
Gary Neville, fellow commentator and former Man United legend, also weighed in on the conversation asking, “Does Rasmus Hojlund have a future at Man United?”
Hojlund had the perfect opportunity to answer his critics and potentially become the match winner for his team, which would have significantly boosted his confidence. However, the lack of consistency in his performance at the highest level has once again been exposed, raising questions about whether the pressure of playing on such a big stage is too much for him.
As Manchester United continues to scout the market for a new striker this summer, this could mean fewer opportunities for Hojlund in the future or, worse still, the beginning of the end of his time at Old Trafford.
