Tottenham Hotspur’s injury woes persist, with a host of key players missing in action for long stretches this season. The absence of vice-captain Cristian Romero is particularly troubling. Due to a hamstring injury, the stalwart defender has been sidelined for almost three months, striking a hefty blow to the defensive strategies of manager Ange Postecoglou and leaving Tottenham bereft of one of their most reliable figures in the backline.
Sports science and physical therapy specialist, Dr. Rajpal Brar, shed light on the nature of Romero’s injury. The Argentine is in the recovery phase from a Grade 3 muscular injury. The seriousness of the injury, together with the considerable amount of time he’s been off the pitch, poses a substantial risk of re-injury if he rushes back into action.
Dr. Brar underscored the fact that there isn’t a definitive timeline for Romero’s comeback, as it hinges greatly on his response to training and match readiness drills. He further specified that the Argentine centre-back would require a minimum of three to four days of comprehensive first-team training before he can be deemed match-fit.
While speaking to Tottenham News, the doctor stated, “This appears to be a Grade 3 muscular injury. The complex part is the length of time he’s been out this season and the possibility of it being a re-injury. There’s no guaranteed timeframe for when he can start with minimal injury risk. It fundamentally depends on his response to bounce matches and consistent time on the pitch. Realistically, it’s still doubtful he’ll be fit for the next match. If he is to regain fitness, he’ll need at least three to four days of complete first-team training.”
As Tottenham prepares for an essential Europa League battle against AZ Alkmaar this Thursday, the chances of Romero being fit for selection seem slim. His extended absence has created a palpable void in Tottenham’s defence, especially during high-pressure matches where his leadership abilities and aggressive gameplay would be of immense value.
Since his transfer from Atalanta to Tottenham in 2021—initially on loan before becoming a permanent move in 2022—Romero has established himself as one of the league’s most formidable centre-backs. His stellar performances earned him the vice-captain’s armband for the 2023—24 season. However, injuries have marred his contributions this season, limiting him to a mere 14 appearances across all competitions, during which he has scored once.
Despite his ongoing fitness issues, the club is reportedly planning to offer him a lucrative new contract. Tottenham is anxiously awaiting his return as they look to make a significant impact in the Europa League while also steadying their league performance.
