After his departure from the Cleveland Browns in 2022, some thought Baker Mayfield’s NFL career was actually nearing the end, especially after he fizzled out as the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback midway through the 2022 campaign.
But then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a chance on Mayfield last year, and it turned out to be a great match for both parties.
The former Browns quarterback put together a performance with the Bucs in 2023 that was arguably the best of his NFL career.
Now, Mayfield is set to become a free agent in less than two weeks, and while it’s possible that he could return to Tampa Bay, he could also wind up with a completely new team for the 2024 season.
According to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, the New England Patriots are reportedly one of the teams that have an interest in adding Mayfield to their roster this year (via Dov Kleiman on Twitter).

With the Bucs in 2023, Mayfield was only able to land a one-year contract worth $4 million.
But after completing 64.3 percent of his passes for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions for Tampa Bay last season, many expect him to be able to land a much more lucrative contract this year.
When it comes to the Patriots, they currently have some of the most cap space of any team in the league, so affordability doesn’t seem like it would be much of a factor if they were to pursue Mayfield in free agency.
Will the former No. 1 draft pick leave the Bucs after just one season and sign with New England?
We’ll all just have to wait and see.
