The Pittsburgh Steelers may have qualified for the Wild Card Round last season, but understood there was a lot of work to do on the roster.
The Steelers addressed their quarterback position by signing Russell Wilson in free agency and trading for Justin Fields.
Next, Pittsburgh took care of their offensive line by using several of their picks in the 2024 NFL Draft to bring in talented rookies like Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier.
Meanwhile, the team could still use some help in the secondary after the unit took a step back in the 2023 season.
The only defensive back the Steelers took in the draft was Ryan Watts whom they selected No. 195 overall.
To address their cornerback needs, Pittsburgh is reportedly taking a shot on Anthony Averett via Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.
“Cornerback Anthony Averett spent the weekend taking part in the Steelers’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis and he will be sticking around a while longer. Agent Chad Wiestling told PFT that the Steelers have signed Averett to a one-year deal after watching him work out with the team,” Alper reported.

Averett is a former fourth-round pick who got his start with the Baltimore Ravens before landing with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Since then, Averett had short stops with the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions on their practice squads.
Averett’s a decent signing for Pittsburgh who could use more depth at the cornerback position, though he likely won’t see many snaps in 2024.
However, should injuries occur then the veteran can step in and at least hold down the fort.
