One of the bigger names among defensive backs still on the NFL free agent market — safety Tashaun Gipson — recently received a serious penalty for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
The 33-year-old received a six-game suspension from the league and took to social media to apologize for his actions.
“I take full responsibility for anything I put into my body,” Gipson posted. “It is with great disappointment that I accept this suspension, and I do so knowing that I have never even attempted to cheat the game.”

Gipson also acknowledged that he is excited to play in his 13th NFL season and is ready to join a contending team.
An undrafted player out of Wyoming in 2012, he has played for five teams in 12 seasons, including the past two seasons for the San Francisco 49ers.
He debuted with the Cleveland Browns (2012-15) before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-18), Houston Texans (2019) and Chicago Bears (2020-21).
The former Pro Bowler has 33 career interceptions and 68 career pass deflections.
He will turn 34 in August, which is significant. There likely won’t be many teams looking to hand out major money to a player in his mid-30s coming off a suspension.
It would not be a surprise if Gipson waited until just before the start of the season to sign with a team.
It most likely would be on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum, and that team will be hoping he can provide a boost when he is able to take the field again.
