The prestigious BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells has kicked off, offering an enticing opportunity for tennis players to make their mark, particularly with the notable absence of the world’s number one player, Jannik Sinner, and the introduction of a new court surface.
Leading the pack of favorites is Carlos Alcaraz, who has emerged victorious in the previous two editions of the tournament. Alcaraz is on a quest to join the exclusive club, currently comprising Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who have managed a three-peat in the Open Era.
Despite the unexpected decision by the organizers to switch the court surface after 25 years, Alcaraz, the young Spanish prodigy, has adapted well. His preparation in California has been robust, and he doesn’t seem to have been thrown off by the changes to the playing field.
Other strong contenders include Alexander Zverev, despite his less than stellar past performances in this tournament and a rough February, and Novak Djokovic, who is eyeing the 100th title of his illustrious career at Indian Wells. Daniil Medvedev is another player to watch. He has been improving his game in recent weeks and has made it to the final at the first Masters 1000 of the season in the last two editions.
Beyond the favorites, there’s an underdog worth keeping an eye on – Ben Shelton. Currently ranked 12th in the world, Shelton kicked off the 2025 season on a high note, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open. Although he was defeated by Sinner in three sets at the iconic Rod Laver Arena, his performance was noteworthy.
In a recent conversation with ‘Vogue,’ renowned coach Brad Gilbert spoke highly of Shelton, suggesting that he could ascend into the top 10, or even the top 5, by the end of the year. Gilbert is particularly impressed by Shelton’s size, agility, formidable serve, and potential. He also finds Shelton’s style of play to be entertaining. He did, however, point out that Shelton needs to work on his return game.
Shelton is set to face either Navone or Tien in his first match at Indian Wells. As the tournament unfolds, it will be fascinating to see how these players fare on the new surface and who will rise to the occasion to claim the title.
