Gauff’s career trajectory took a sharp upward turn when she clinched her first Slam title at the 2023 US Open. Her scintillating performance didn’t stop there; she continued to impress in her subsequent Majors. Reaching the semifinals at both the 2024 Australian Open and the French Open, Gauff demonstrated her passion and prowess on the court.
However, the journey of this rising star hasn’t been without its hiccups. In her most recent three Majors, Gauff didn’t quite hit the mark she’d set for herself. She dropped out of the Wimbledon and the US Open last year in the round-of-16 and her attempt at this year’s Australian Open concluded in the quarterfinals.
Despite these setbacks, Gauff’s career has seen significant successes. Her ranking soared to a career-high of No. 2 last June.
When asked about her ambitions, Gauff was clear about her preference for another Grand Slam title over the world No. 1 spot. She feels that the titles you’ve won leave a more lasting impression than your world ranking. “Of course, if I could have both, that would be great, too,” Gauff added during the Miami Open.
Her hunger for victory has not been satiated with just one win. She asserted, “After having won one, I would love to win another in the future. If I had already won four and still hadn’t reached No. 1, then perhaps the narrative would be different. But with only one under my belt, I would like to add another to enhance my track record.”
Despite not adding another Grand Slam title to her collection in the last five attempts, Gauff remains optimistic. Her performance has been marred by inconsistency since the Australian Open, but she appears to be regaining her stride in Miami. She won her first two matches and is set to face Magda Linette in the round-of-16.
With ample time left before the French Open, Gauff has the opportunity to build momentum and aim for another Grand Slam title. As she continues to carve out her place in the tennis world, her focus is on adding to her trophy case rather than climbing the ranking ladder.
