Despite no longer being at the pinnacle of his career, tennis legend Novak Djokovic remains an intimidating force on the court. Even as he navigates his post-prime years, Djokovic still commands a formidable presence that keeps his opponents on edge. This was evident in his recent match against Matteo Berrettini in Doha, where despite Djokovic’s age, Berrettini had to bring his A-game.
Djokovic has been candid about the fact that Grand Slam tournaments remain his primary focus. His meticulous planning and scheduling over the past several years are a testament to this singular objective. Following a somewhat lackluster performance in 2024, the formerly ranked world No.1 has made a commitment to participate more actively in the 2025 tournament circuit. His aim is to be better equipped for the four paramount events on the tennis calendar.
At 37, Djokovic, a native of Belgrade, recently missed an opportunity to clinch the 25th Major title of his illustrious career. A left thigh injury thwarted his chances at the Australian Open, despite an impressive showdown against Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals. Although an unfortunate physical setback cut his journey short, it’s clear Djokovic’s potential remains undiminished.
Even as he grapples with secondary tournaments, Djokovic’s prowess in Grand Slam tournaments is indisputable. American tennis pro Tommy Paul underscored this point during a recent episode of the ‘Nothing Major’ podcast. Responding to a question about the toughest player he’s faced, Paul didn’t hesitate to name Djokovic.
“Djokovic is undoubtedly the most challenging opponent I’ve faced,” Paul disclosed. “When we met at the Australian Open, I was playing at my best, and yet, he left me feeling outmatched.”
Paul also mentioned other formidable competitors like Alexander Zverev, who, despite not having crossed rackets with Paul in a while, has displayed exceptional form this year. However, Taylor Fritz seemed to have Zverev’s measure this year, prompting Paul to humorously refer to Fritz as Zverev’s ‘Daddy’.
Paul also recalled his encounter with Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, describing his playing level as ‘wild’. He ranked Alcaraz second on his list of tough opponents.
Paul’s faceoff with Djokovic took place in the semi-final of the 2023 Australian Open, a tournament wherein Djokovic displayed top form. It remains a vivid example of the Serbian’s enduring capabilities, especially in his most favored tournament.
Despite the passing of time and the emergence of new talent, Novak Djokovic’s stature in the world of tennis remains unshaken. His experience, skill, and determination make him a formidable opponent, a fact reinforced by Tommy Paul’s candid admission.
