In a swift response to Novak Djokovic’s public plea, tennis ace Nick Kyrgios has confirmed his commitment to rekindling their partnership on the court. Previously, this dynamic duo had hinted at a doubles collaboration following their iconic face-off in the 2022 Wimbledon final, a partnership that was eventually realized at the Brisbane International earlier this year.
Djokovic, the holder of 24 Major titles, expressed his eagerness to revive the partnership with the Australian superstar. He extended an olive branch, inviting Kyrgios to participate in his home tournament in Belgrade as the season concludes. Kyrgios, aged 29, did not hesitate in his response to Djokovic’s proposal.
Their friendship, as unexpected as it is, was solidified when Kyrgios, formerly ranked 13th globally, stood in Djokovic’s corner during the latter’s trying time leading up to the 2022 Australian Open. Djokovic faced a challenging ordeal, including detention in a hotel and a last-minute deportation from Australia on the tournament’s eve. This public display of solidarity resulted in what the Serbian star referred to as an “official bromance.”
This cordial relationship led to their decision to team up for doubles, a plan that was fulfilled in January. While participating in the ATP 250 in Brisbane as wildcard entrants, Djokovic and Kyrgios claimed a match victory before succumbing to the top-seeded duo of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus.
Djokovic, now 37, shared his aspirations for another doubles stint with Kyrgios during an interview with Tennis Majors. He expressed his desire for a reunion on home turf at the impending Belgrade tournament. Kyrgios was quick to accept this invitation, confirming his participation for the Serbian event.
“I’m in partner,” the Australian sportsman announced through a post on X (previously known as Twitter).
As of now, the focus for both Djokovic and Kyrgios is their individual pursuits at the Miami Open. Kyrgios, coming off a victory against qualifier Mackenzie McDonald, is set to face off against the 22nd seed Karen Khachanov. Djokovic, the fourth seed, will be making his debut in the tournament against fellow Australian Rinky Hijikata on Friday.
This will be Djokovic’s first appearance at the Miami Open since 2019, where he advanced to the fourth round. All eyes are now on this formidable duo as they gear up for their respective singles campaigns and a potential doubles reunion in the near future.
