Tennis sensation, Novak Djokovic, recently offered an explanation for his viral video, in which he appeared to be limping as he entered Doha airport. The 37-year-old Serb clarified that the limp was not a result of his Australian Open injury but rather, an unfortunate collision with his ankle as he prepared to leave for the airport.
The viral video sparked a wave of concern among Djokovic’s fans, who erroneously connected his limp to the hamstring tear he suffered at the Australian Open. This injury forced his withdrawal from the semifinal round. However, just three weeks later, Djokovic was back in action at the Qatar Open. Despite an unexpected first-round loss to Matteo Berrettini, Djokovic managed to make it to the doubles quarterfinal alongside Fernando Verdasco.
Addressing the misconceptions surrounding the viral video at Indian Wells, Djokovic stated, “It was really awkward to see that video. I hit myself quite hard as I was stepping out to leave, which was quite early, around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. The limping was due to a sharp impact on my ankle, nothing more. However, people related it to my previous injury, assuming it was a resurgence.”
Djokovic, however, is in high spirits and is eagerly anticipating his appearances at Indian Wells and Miami this year. “I’m feeling good and I’m really looking forward to participating in the Sunshine Double for the first time in about six years,” he shared.
As the No. 6 seed, Djokovic was given a first-round bye in Indian Wells. However, in a twist of fate, instead of a rematch with Nick Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon final adversary, Djokovic will now open his campaign against Botic van de Zandschulp, who advanced after Kyrgios retired due to an injury.
Djokovic, alongside Roger Federer, is the only player to have completed a three-peat at Indian Wells. However, his last triumph in the desert was back in 2016. As he steps onto the court once again, fans and critics alike will be watching to see if he can recreate his past glories.
