At 36 years old and with 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic has nothing left to prove—yet he’s still out there, competing at the highest level. Why? The Serbian superstar recently sat down with Vijesti, a Montenegrin publication, to reveal the real reason behind his unwavering commitment to tennis.
“Tennis Helps Me Grow the Most as a Person”
For Djokovic, continuing his career isn’t just about winning titles or setting records—it’s about personal growth.
“Primarily, it’s because of my love for tennis and for sports. Secondly, I believe that tennis helps me grow the most as a person—no matter how strange that may sound.”
Tennis isn’t just a profession for him—it’s a journey of self-discovery. And for someone who has spent over two decades battling on the court, every match is an opportunity to push his limits, face his fears, and emerge stronger.
The Emotional Rollercoaster of a Champion
Djokovic is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve. Whether it’s smashing rackets, roaring in triumph, or clashing with crowds, he doesn’t hold back. And he admits that his emotions sometimes get the better of him.
“On the court, during a match, I go through a million emotions—the best and the worst ones—doubt, criticism, ecstasy, satisfaction, anger, rage, and everything in between. Sometimes, in those few hours, I even feel embarrassed by what I go through and how I behave, as well as by the thoughts that cross my mind.”
But even with the chaos of competition, Djokovic remains grounded in one core value—respect for his opponents.
“I am proud that I can experience all of this in a human and sporting manner and still shake hands with my opponent, whether I win or lose. I think these are the values that sports promote and the reason why people identify with athletes.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond his personal growth, Djokovic also sees a bigger purpose in continuing his career: inspiring future generations.
“I truly feel that by playing professional tennis, I continue to inspire younger generations to pick up a racket—not just in our country but around the world.”
For him, the sport is more than just chasing trophies. It’s about leaving a legacy, motivating kids to be active, and fostering a love for sports in any form.
“I would love for everyone to play tennis, but I would be just as happy if they took up any sport, with or without a ball, because physical activity is essential—for health and for everything else—from the youngest age.”
Djokovic’s Unfinished Business
Despite his historic achievements, Djokovic still believes he has more to give—both as a competitor and a role model. His passion, emotional intensity, and drive to push human limits make him one of the greatest athletes of all time.
So, is retirement anywhere in sight? Not for now. As long as he continues to grow, inspire, and compete at the highest level, Djokovic isn’t going anywhere.
