While Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka share a close friendship off the court, fans hoping to see the duo join forces in doubles at the Brisbane International were left disappointed. Instead, Badosa teamed up with Ons Jabeur, and during a press conference, she revealed the reason behind the decision.
“She Doesn’t Need It Right Now” – Badosa on Sabalenka
Badosa, who suffered an early exit in both singles and doubles in Brisbane, humorously explained that Sabalenka didn’t need extra match practice to perform at her peak:
“With Ons, I have a great relationship. Also with Aryna if it happens, but I think she doesn’t need a lot of matches right now (smiling). She’s good with that.”
Badosa emphasized that partnering with Jabeur was a strategic decision aimed at honing their games, particularly for moments when they both needed more match sharpness.
A Tough Brisbane Outing for Badosa
The Spaniard, seeded fourth in Brisbane, was ousted in the singles second round by Elina Avanesyan in a tightly contested three-set battle. In doubles, she and Jabeur fell to the eventual champions, Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreeva, in the second round. Despite the early exits, Badosa hinted at continuing her doubles pairing with Jabeur for future tournaments.
“I think it helps each other,” Badosa added about doubles, acknowledging the benefits of extra match play.
Sabalenka’s Brisbane Triumph Sets the Tone for 2025
While Badosa’s Brisbane campaign was challenging, her best friend Aryna Sabalenka thrived. The World No. 1 clinched her 18th career title after a comeback victory against 21-year-old qualifier Polina Kudermetova in the final. It marked Sabalenka’s second Brisbane International title and her fourth title on Australian soil.
Sabalenka heads to the Australian Open, aiming for a historic third consecutive title, a feat last achieved by Martina Hingis.
“I feel my game pretty well. Mentally, physically I’ll be ready to go at the Australian Open,” said Sabalenka after her victory, expressing confidence in her preparation.
Best Friends, Fierce Competitors
The friendship between Sabalenka, Badosa, and Jabeur continues to entertain fans both on and off the court. Whether it’s through lighthearted banter or their competitive spirit, the trio has cemented their place as fan favorites. While doubles partnerships may shift, one thing is clear: the camaraderie between these stars adds a unique dimension to the WTA Tour.
All eyes will now be on Sabalenka as she seeks to make history in Melbourne, while Badosa looks to bounce back and make a deep run at the Australian Open.
