Tennis legend Roger Federer’s financial prowess is as impressive as his domination on the court, with an astute investment strategy that has netted him a staggering £130 million more than the career earnings of his peer, Novak Djokovic. Despite hanging up his racket in 2022, Federer’s fortune continues to grow, fueled significantly by a judicious investment in Swiss running shoe company, On Running.
In the course of his 24-year professional career, Federer raked in over £100 million in prize money, while Djokovic, still actively playing, has collected approximately £144 million over his 22-year career. However, Federer’s net worth has been substantially boosted by his off-the-court business ventures, most notably the purchase of a 3% stake in On Running just before the company went public in September 2021.
The tennis superstar’s endorsement led to a surge in the company’s popularity, catapulting its value to a whopping £9 billion ($12 billion). Consequently, Federer’s investment ballooned to an astounding £277 million ($360 million), almost tripling his tennis earnings and nearly doubling Djokovic’s entire career income.
On Running acknowledges Federer’s instrumental role in their success, particularly his contributions to the ROGER Pro shoe design. An official spokesperson from On Running extolled Federer’s input, stating, “Roger’s contribution towards the success and immense popularity of The ROGER Pro is unquestionable, and he continues to be one of On’s most admired innovation leaders. Roger’s wealth of knowledge and expertise has been instrumental in every aspect of the performance design and technology adapted to meet the demands of the game.”
While Federer reaps the fruits of his investment, the tennis world continues its rhythm. The Miami Open is currently underway, with Djokovic poised to play his round of 16 match against Lorenzo Musetti on March 25. Djokovic is no stranger to success at the Miami Open, having clinched the title six times, completed the elusive ‘Sunshine Double’ four times, and recorded 45 total victories.
The Sunshine Double, a prestigious achievement that involves winning both the Miami Open and Indian Wells Masters in the same year, is a feat Djokovic achieved three years consecutively. Federer isn’t far behind, having accomplished the double three times in his career.
On the most wins leaderboard for the Miami Open, Federer holds the second spot with 56 victories, narrowly trailing Andre Agassi’s record of 61 wins. As the tournament advances, the tennis world eagerly awaits the next addition to the distinguished list of Sunshine Double winners. Jack Draper, who recently triumphed at the Indian Wells Masters, was on track for the double, but a defeat to Jakub Mensik stalled his progress, leaving fans to anticipate the next potential contender.
