The San Diego Padres had very high odds of getting eliminated from postseason contention on Wednesday.
A loss would have knocked them out, but had the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago Cubs, or the Miami Marlins won (twice) on Wednesday, San Diego would have been out of chances, too.
Incredibly, the Padres got to live another day: the Reds lost, the Cubs lost, and the Marlins won only one game in their doubleheader against the New York Mets.
Most importantly, San Diego won its game against the San Francisco Giants.
The tables might be starting to turn, because the Padres finally won an extra-inning game.
“It took 159 games, but the San Diego #Padres finally win their first extra-inning game of the season, 5-2 over the #SFGiants in 10 innings. They are 1-12 in extra-inning games,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted.

Can the Padres miraculously steal one of the National League Wild Card spots?
That is the exact word to define their pursuit: a miracle.
That’s what needs to take place for them to advance.
They need to win all their remaining games and all of the Reds, Marlins, and Cubs to lose every game.
Is it possible?
Yes, of course: it’s baseball, and anything can happen in a four-day span.
Is it particularly likely?
Not by any means, especially if some players aren’t willing to go the extra mile to help.
It’s nice to see the Padres finally playing to their potential, but they might have started to do it a little too late.
