The New England Patriots just lost a true leader today.
After 16 years with the organization, special teams legend Matthew Slater officially announced his retirement from the league.
That was expected, though, as he almost retired last season, and the team honored him in his last game.
With that in mind, NFL legend Tom Brady took to social media to express his love and admiration for his former teammate, calling him one of the greatest football players he’s ever shared a locker room with (via Savage Sports).

Special teamers don’t get as much praise and recognition from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but Slater should still get his golden jacket, by all means.
He made it to ten Pro Bowls, the most by a special teams player in NFL history.
Also, he was instrumental in winning three Super Bowls in Foxboro, becoming a team captain for 13 years.
Jerod Mayo is building his coaching staff, so perhaps he could give him a spot there, assuming he’s even interested in staying close to the game.
Whatever the case, after all he did for the organization, both on and off the field, he’ll go down as one of the most beloved and respected members of the franchise.
The Patriots will look like a very different team next season, but all things eventually come to an end.
