The San Francisco 49ers advanced to Super Bowl LVIII this weekend after coming back from a huge halftime deficit to take down the Detroit Lions.
They’ll face the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas – a team San Francisco lost to the last time the 49ers reached the Super Bowl in 2019.
San Francisco will be led by Brock Purdy this time, though, more than a year after he took over as the team’s starting quarterback following season-ending injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.
Neither Lance nor Garoppolo are on the team anymore, with Lance being traded to the Dallas Cowboys and Garoppolo signing with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Lance appears to have not harbored bad feelings towards his old team, though, after he liked the 49ers’ social media post celebrating the NFC championship win.

Lance was supposed to be the 49ers’ franchise quarterback after San Francisco traded up to draft him with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021.
He sat behind Garoppolo for one season before being named the Week 1 starter in 2022.
But Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury early in the year, which paved the way for Purdy to eventually take over after Garoppolo also suffered a season-ending injury.
Lance didn’t prove this offseason that he could beat out Purdy for the starting job and was eventually traded to Dallas to give Purdy a clear runway for the starting role.
Now, Purdy is on the way to Las Vegas to compete in his first Super Bowl, while Lance remains the Cowboys’ backup quarterback for at least the foreseeable future.
