MLB is full of star players who want to command top dollar on the open market.
But there are only a few teams that are willing to spend big money on free agents.
Some teams try and trade players they know they will not be able to re-sign.
That way they can get something back before the player hits free agency.
That was the case in San Diego with Juan Soto.
Soto is a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.
The Padres knew they were not going to re-sign him which is why they agreed to trade him.
San Diego sent Soto to the New York Yankees for a package of players.
During last season’s All-Star festivities, Red Sox legend David Ortiz sprayed “Yankee Repellent” on Soto.
Unfortunately for Ortiz, his spray did not work, via Fireside Yankees.

Soto will now wear the pinstripes in hopes of bringing another World Series to New York.
The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the best hitters in the sport.
He should fit in nicely to a lineup with Aaron Judge.
The Yankees are coming off a disappointing 82-80 season.
Missing the playoffs with the Yankees’ payroll will never be acceptable.
That is why they felt desperate to go get another star.
But this move for Soto does not clear up all issues with the Yankees.
They still need to improve their pitching.
Outside of Gerrit Cole, the Yankees have plenty of question marks in their rotation and bullpen.
It is safe to assume the Soto trade is just the first of many moves for the Yankees.
