The New York Yankees opened their 2024 season with a sweep of the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
From Thursday to Sunday, the Yankees won close game after close game, benefitting from top defensive plays, clutch hitting, and a brilliant bullpen performance.
The best player on the Yankees roster, at least in the first weekend of baseball, was clearly Juan Soto.
The Yanks traded five players to get him from the San Diego Padres, knowing that they would only have him for one season.
In that season, New York intends to convince him that the Bronx is the place he wants to play in for the rest of his career.
So far, so good on that front: Soto was thrown into a heated rivalry, and was the best player on the field.
MLB posted a video with highlights of his weekend.
It was electric:

Soto showed the best of his skillset, and then some.
He worked walks, he had quality at-bats, he laid off tough pitches, he hit hard liners, home runs, doubles, and incredibly clutch hits.
On Thursday, he had an outfield assist in the ninth inning that would have meant the tying run for the Astros.
On Sunday, he had the go-ahead hit for the Yanks, again in the ninth.
He is just cool and smooth in spots in which everyone else struggles or become petrified.
For the young season, he is hitting .529/.600/.765 with a 1.365 OPS, a homer, a double, and three walks.
The best, however, is yet to come, so watch out.
