Leading up to the NFL Draft, J.J. McCarthy was perhaps the most polarizing quarterback prospect.
His numbers in college were nothing to brag about, but his record, experience under an NFL-like system, and ability to rise to the occasion when his team needed him still made him an intriguing pick.
Some weren’t sure about his prospects as a first-round selection, while others thought he could end up being the best quarterback in this class or at least find the most success early in his career.
Fast forward to today, and things haven’t changed that much.
According to a report by Kevin Seifert of ESPN, McCarthy has been up and down in training sessions open to the media thus far, using one simple word to describe his performances: “rookie” (via The Purple Persuasion).
Per @SeifertESPN, #Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy has “plenty of juice” but has struggled with accuracy at times so far during the offseason programs open to the media

Per Seifert, McCarthy has struggled with accuracy and consistency at times.
He reported that he had three straight passes hit the ground during a red-zone drill.
Still, he’s also shown “plenty of juice” in his throws, and while the consistency hasn’t always been there, he’s had some very impressive passes as well.
At the end of the day, the Vikings already have a veteran there in Sam Darnold, so it’s not like they have to throw their rookie quarterback right into the fire.
All rookie quarterbacks go through growing pains, and it’s not wise to rule them out after one or two bad seasons.
They must be patient and allow him to grow through his struggles, and only time with tell if they made the right choice.
