With the Kirk Cousins era officially over for the Minnesota Vikings, the franchise is heading in another direction at the quarterback position, with the team potentially set to make a move to bring in a young player to be the future face of the franchise.
Currently, veteran newcomer Sam Darnold will likely be the Week 1 starter for the Vikings, as the former No. 3 overall pick recently signed a one-year deal with the team with a maximum value of $10 million.
With Darnold being a short-term option, the team drafting a quarterback during the 2024 NFL Draft makes a lot of sense, but if they want one of the top-tier quarterbacks available on April 25, Minnesota will have to trade up for a better draft position.
Currently, the Vikings are sitting at No. 11 overall in next month’s draft, which is too low to get some of the big-name quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels, but they might be able to grab J.J. McCarthy out of the University of Michigan.
However, McCarthy’s draft stock has gone up as of late, which means he could go much higher than anticipated, and the Vikings seem to be interested in him, with the team bringing him in for a private workout, according to Albert Breer of MMQB via @vikesinsider on Twitter.
The Vikings arranged a private workout with QB J.J. McCarthy, which HC Kevin O’Connell and GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will attend.

As of right now, the draft order seems to be set in terms of the top-three quarterbacks going with the first three picks in the upcoming draft, as the Chicago Bears will almost certainly take Williams, while the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots could go with Maye and Daniels in consecutive picks.
That said, McCarthy will potentially be the fourth quarterback taken in the draft, meaning the Vikings will have to figure out how to move up.
