A U.S. military MQ-1C drone crashed in southern Somalia earlier this week, the U.S. African Command (AFRICOM) confirmed on Friday. The unmanned aircraft went down on Tuesday around 12:40 p.m. local time, with AFRICOM clarifying that preliminary investigations suggest no hostile action caused the incident.
The drone was part of ongoing U.S. surveillance and counter-terrorism operations in the region, where Somalia faces persistent threats from groups like al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked organization. AFRICOM announced that a formal investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
