The Chicago White Sox are one team that does not have a positive outlook entering 2024.
They lack talent and seem more likely to finish as the worst team in baseball than be in the playoffs.
At least it seems like the White Sox know where they are as a team.
They are entering a rebuild and have a few players they should be looking to trade.
Their first big trade came on Wednesday when they sent pitcher Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres.
Cease can be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he has been inconsistent.
Teams want to make sure they are getting the best version of Cease.
After his last spring training outing, it looks like the 28-year-old is rounding into form.
According to Bob Nightengale, White Sox GM Chris Getz said the interest in Cease dramatically increased after his most recent outing.
Chicago White Sox GM Chris Getz said the interest and offers dramatically increased after Dylan Cease’s last outing against the Cincinnati Reds when the Padres stepped up Wednesday:
3.1 innings
2 hits
1 run
1 walk
8 strikeouts— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) March 14, 2024
He showed his strikeout stuff which made him dominant in 2022.
That season, Cease finished second in AL Cy Young voting with 184.0 innings and 227 strikeouts.
The Padres hope to get that version of Cease this season.
What makes trading Cease the smart move for the White Sox is his contract status.
He still has two years of control and that is something every team is looking for.
Chicago got a nice package of prospects back for Cease that will hopefully speed up their rebuild.
Both teams should be thrilled with how this deal turned out.
