The New York Yankees’ history is filled with iconic plays and moments.
Even in years in which they don’t win the World Series, they have one of those priceless moments that fans recall fondly because they were memorable.
2001 was a particularly memorable year in New York history, with the 9/11 attacks.
It was a painful moment in America’s history.
Baseball-wise, it was a year that Yankees fans would like to forget given how it ended: with Luis Gonzalez logging a walk-off hit against Mariano Rivera to give the Arizona Diamondbacks their first World Series title.
Before that moment, however, there were things that made Yankees fans proud.
Mike Mussina nearly threw a perfect game, Derek Jeter earned his “Mr. November” nickname for a walk-off home run against Byung-Hyun Kim in the World Series, and he also became famous for “The Flip.”
That play happened on this day, but 22 years ago, during the American League Division Series against the Oakland Athletics.
YES Network celebrated the anniversary of The Flip with a Twitter post.

While playing against the talented Athletics in Game 3, Terrence Long hit a long drive towards the outfield.
Shane Spencer threw the ball back to the infield, but overthrew the cutoff men.
Jeter moved from the middle infield to chase the ball, which was starting to lose strength and speed.
The Yankees Hall of Famer grabbed it and flipped it to the catcher, who nabbed Jeremy Giambi at home plate.
The Yankees overcame a 0-2 hole to win the series, 3-2, and advance to the Championship Series.
If Giambi scored, there is a good chance the A’s would have gone on to win the series.
Instead, New York won and the comeback was in place.
