The New York Yankees have made the move of the offseason thus far.
Everyone was wondering what would happen to Juan Soto this offseason.
His name had been floated around in potential trade rumors and he has found a new home, at least for one season.
The San Diego Padres agreed to trade Soto to the New York Yankees for a package of players.
But, Soto is still playing on a one-year contract.
At the end of the 2024 season, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
The Yankees knew that trading for him likely meant they would have to re-sign him to a monumental contract.
But, it appears that may not be the case.
According to Chris Kirschner, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said: “I haven’t had any conversations regarding that. We understand it’s a possible short-term situation.”

Not hearing Cashman say the team will be working on a new contract is concerning.
Soto is a once-in-a-generation player, so the Yankees cannot be thinking about only keeping him for one year.
Right?
New York is constantly one of the highest-spending teams in baseball.
That is why it made sense for them to trade for Soto.
But if they only get him for one season, that move would be considered a mistake.
There is still plenty to sort out during the season.
Yet, not seeing Soto in pinstripes for the long term would be surprising.
It would not be a surprise to see Soto get a record-setting contract.
But the team he signs that deal is still up in the air.
